CAMEL RIDE AND 1 NIGHT IN DESERT CAMP IN MERZOUGA

Visiting Morocco cannot be accomplished without spending a night in the middle of Sahara Desert using camels as transportation. Throughout history in Merzouga region, camels were the major way of transportation between tribes and nomad camps.

Thanks to their ability to store important amounts of food and water in their body, camels are known as the ‘ship of the Desert’. This allows them to accomplish long journeys without exhaustion.

In the sand dunes of Merzouga, both children and adults can try camel trekking. Taking this experience is a great way to share traditional Nomadic culture and live through its historical prominence.

While on a camel ride, you can catch amazing views of desert landscapes. In the evening, you transfer to the edges of the dunes where camels park waiting for the passengers.

The camel man, the person in the forefront who guides the camels, helps you ride your camel and start the trip. He leads and stops whenever you want to take memorable photos.

On top of a dune, you attend the sunset in a marvelous desert atmosphere. At this stage, you can also enjoy sandboarding before descending to the camps. Upon arrival, the hosts welcome you with open arms to drink a cup of tea and settle at your tent.

In your well-equipped tent, you can relax and take a shower before dinner.

The restaurant is a huge decorated tent in the middle of the camp. It is where they will serve you dinner in a quiet atmosphere in the middle of the Sahara Desert dunes. Around a campfire after dinner, the camp staff sings and dances to the melodies of Berber drums music.

Join them to make your stay unforgettable. On a clear night, you can see the sky full of shining stars a sight that is not often seen.

CAMEL TREKKING & 2 NIGHTS IN DESERT CAMP IN MERZOUGA

Back in history, Merzouga was a group of nomadic families who lived in their traditional tents. They transformed from and to Merzouga looking for water and food for their animals. The sand dunes played a major part in settling people in Merzouga thanks to their ability to store water beneath. By digging wells next to the dunes, people established villages, gardens, and camps around the dunes.

As a result, the tourism section grew in this part of the desert, and people invested by starting tourism projects. By this time, people from all over the region start to leave Merzouga to seek job opportunities.

As one of the first activities tourists did in Merzouga, camel trekking in the desert is always special.

On the first day, you transfer into the boundaries of the dunes where camel trekking starts. Each one on a camel, you begin your trip through the sand dunes of Erg-Chebbi towards the camps. On the way, you can enjoy the magnificent views of the golden sand dunes of the Sahara Desert.

The leader of the caravan camels knows the perfect way to reach the camp. Also, he is always ready to stop whenever you ask him for photos or anything. He as well leads you to the top of a dune to catch the perfect view of the desert sunset. Then, you descend down the dunes to settle at the camp, where you spend the night.

After a majestic sunrise, you can have breakfast before preparing yourself for the special desert journey. Packed our camels with food, water, and necessary stuff, we begin the trip through a dried valley. This valley is what separates the sand dunes from the black rocky desert, which is called the ‘Hamada’. It is also the old trace of the famous Rally Dakar when it was held in Morocco.

Seasonably and depending on the rainfalls, the valley sometimes floods making a river that penetrates the desert. Throughout the shadows of the valley trees, we reach an old village which is named ‘Tamerdanit’. Sometimes preferred as the old Merzouga, the village now is almost abandoned. You can now see the remaining buildings and wells of locals who moved into Merzouga.

At the beginning of the Hamada, there live nomad families in their traditional tents alongside their animals. It is a sporting chance to discover the way of life of these families when we settle with them. Upon arrival, nomads host us in their tents with tea and snacks as a way of Berber hospitality. We take off the supplies from the camels and we give them enough food and water to rest.

In the tent, you can exchange conversations with nomads, play with their children, and marvel at the special-designed tent. Made of camel wool, the tent design fits and survives all seasons. In winter, they close the sides and set fire and it is warm inside. On the other hand, in summer they open both sides and fresh air gets in and out. Out of the tent, you can see the barn where they keep their animals; sheep, goats, and chickens. You can even hold and play with cute goat kids.

At lunchtime, they will serve you their homemade delicious food in the tent traditional. You will live this day as a real nomad. After lunch, you can take some rest before heading back to the camp. Through another way next to the dunes, we pack our camels and start the trip back to the tents.

In the evening, you can climb up the dunes next to the camp to enjoy some sandboarding. It is also a great opportunity to catch the magnificent desert sunrise. At the camp, you will have dinner followed by Berber drums music to make your stay enjoyable. Also, you can’t miss the chance to see the shining stars in clear sight of the sky. On your well-equipped tent, you spend this night in the middle of Sahara Desert sand dunes.
